Teacher Process

Teachers:

This project should take several weeks of research.  If it is meant to be done in parallel with a nuclear chemistry unit, it should be given at least three weekends to give students enough time.  This project could also be varied to be a vacation assignment.

Students should be checked for drafts after each week.

1)    Draft 1 should be: The Note cards.  Teachers should check and see that the notecards are accurate and complete enough to use.

2)    Draft 2 should be:  The Articles:  Teachers should collect a copy of the articles at this point, read them, and get corrections back to the students BEFORE they start the final assembly of the paper.

3)    Draft 3 should be the rough draft of the completed newspaper project.

4)    Draft 4 should be the final, completed newspaper project.

Listed below is the assignment for the students.

The Process

In this project you will be constructing a newspaper.  In order to do so effectively you will need both information on the scientific aspect of the nuclear bomb, as well as the historic aspect of it.

1)      Click on the following links that deal with the science behind the atomic bomb:

a.    http://www.atomicarchive.com/Fission/Fission1.shtml

b.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT0ZNPz3t2o

c.     http://www.visionlearning.com/library/module_viewer.php?mid=59

d.    http://www.chem.duke.edu/~jds/cruise_chem/nuclear/nuclear.html

e.    http://www.wwnorton.com/college/chemistry/gilbert/tutorials/ch2.htm

2)      For each of these links, you must write a summary of the information on note cards.  You should include all of the relevant scientific information.

3)      You should use the note cards to construct a newspaper article titled “The Science Behind the Nuclear Bomb.”  This newspaper article should be at least 600 words and should be written using the proper format that was discussed in class for newspaper articles.  You should also look at the science section of any major newspaper (such as the New York Times) for reference.  Type your newspaper article using Microsoft Word.

4)      Click on the following links that deal with the history of the atomic bomb:

a.    http://inventors.about.com/od/astartinventions/a/atomic_bomb.htm

                                                             i.      You should also click on TWO of the links in the above site and summarize those as well

b.    http://www.atomicmuseum.com/Tour/manhattanproject.cfm

c.     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rHrV2QhArA

5)      For each of these links, you must write a summary of the information on note cards.  You should include all of the relevant historical information.

6)      Use the note cards to construct a newspaper article titled “The History Behind the Nuclear Bomb.” This newspaper article should be at least 600 words and should be written using the proper format that was discussed in class for newspaper articles.  Type your newspaper article using Microsoft Word.

7)      Find two, relevant, royalty-free pictures to make your newspaper look great.  You may also draw, sketch, or use computer art to create one of the pictures.  Be sure and reference your photographs or pictures.

8)      Cut and paste your two articles into a newspaper format.  Your newspaper should have at least two pictures included with the two articles you’ve written.  Your final project could be constructed digitally on Microsoft Word using textboxes, art and drawing toolbars OR it can be physically cut and pasted onto a larger newspaper sized piece of paper.
